Something to do when the course is closed.
The courts are covered and lit, so frost, a waterlogged course or a dark December evening doesn't stop you playing. Padel also builds the rotation and hand speed that carry over to your swing.

Questions
Before you play
Do I need to have played before?
No. Padel is built for beginners, and the free taster clinics on opening weekend are made for people who've never picked up a racket.
Do I need to be fit?
Not at all. You play at your own pace, and the court is small, so it's much less running than tennis.
What should I wear and bring?
Comfortable sports clothes and flat-soled trainers or court shoes. Rackets are €4 to hire and balls are free with every booking.
Do I need a partner?
Padel is played in fours, so bring friends, or join an open game in "Find a game" above and we'll fill the court.
Can non-members play?
Yes. Visitors are very welcome from Saturday 7 November. Golf members get a preview weekend on 31 October and a lower price.
What if it rains?
The courts are covered and lit, so you stay dry and can play after dark.
How do I book?

Rules
The rules, and everything you need to know.
Padel is easy to pick up. Here's how a game works, from the first serve to the final point, plus what to bring and how things work at Kilbrack.
The basics
- Doubles only. Two teams of two, one on each side of the net.
- The court is 20 m long and 10 m wide, with glass and mesh walls around it.
- The net is 88 cm high in the middle and 92 cm at the posts.
- The racket is solid with no strings, and has holes in it. It must have a strap that stays around your wrist.
- The ball looks like a tennis ball but is a little softer.
- The goal: win points by hitting the ball so your opponents can't return it.
Scoring
- Points go 15, 30, 40, then game, just like tennis.
- At 40-40 (deuce), a team needs two points in a row. Many clubs play "golden point" instead: whoever wins the next point wins the game.
- A set is won by the first team to win six games, by at least two.
- At 6-6 in games there's a tie-break. First to 7 points, by two, wins the set.
- A match is usually the best of three sets.
- Swap ends after the 1st, 3rd, 5th game and so on.
The serve
- Stand behind the service line. At the start of a game, serve from the right, then swap sides after every point.
- Let the ball bounce once, then hit it underarm, at or below your waist.
- Aim diagonally across the net so it lands in the opposite service box.
- You get two tries. If both miss, it's a double fault and the other team scores.
- If the ball clips the net and still lands in the right box, it's a let. Serve again.
Each player serves a whole game, then it passes to the other team.
The rally
- Returning the serve: let the ball bounce in your box first, then hit it back over the net.
- After that, you can hit the ball after one bounce, or before it bounces (a volley).
- Each team can only hit the ball once per shot. Your partner can't touch it too.
- The ball must go over the net and land on the opponents' side of the court.
- The point carries on until someone makes a mistake.
Using the walls
The walls are what make padel special. They're part of the game.
- If the ball bounces on your side and then comes off a wall, you can still hit it back.
- You can let the ball come off the back wall and play it on the rebound, which is why rallies last so long.
- You can also aim to bounce the ball on the other side and let it come off their walls, which makes it very hard to return.
What's out:
- The ball hits a wall or fence on the other side before bouncing on the floor.
- The ball leaves the court, or hits the outside of the structure or the posts.
- The ball bounces twice on your side before you hit it.
Lost points
You lose the point if:
- The ball bounces twice on your side.
- You, your racket or your clothes touch the net or its posts.
- The ball hits you or your clothing.
- You hit it into the net, or out of the court.
- Your team hits the same shot twice, for example both partners touch the ball.
- You hit the ball before it crosses to your side.
Kit & etiquette
- Shoes: flat-soled trainers or court shoes. No boots or spikes.
- Clothes: anything comfortable that lets you move.
- Racket strap: always put it round your wrist.
- Be kind to the glass: don't lean on or kick the walls.
- Call it honestly, and say "sorry" if you hit a ball into a neighbouring court.
- Keep the court clear of bottles and bags during play.
At Kilbrack
- Opening hours: 07:00 to 22:00, seven days a week from Saturday 7 November 2026.
- Booking: courts are booked in 90-minute slots. Members can book up to 14 days ahead, visitors up to 7 days ahead.
- Prices: visitors €40 peak and €32 off-peak. Golf members €24 peak and €18 off-peak. Those are per court, so split them four ways.
- Peak times are weekday evenings and all weekend. Off-peak is 07:00 to 17:00 on weekdays.
- Rackets are €4 to hire. Balls are free with every booking.
- Coaching: €15 each for a 60-minute group session, or €50 an hour for a private lesson.
- Clubhouse: changing rooms, lockers and the bar are shared with the golf club.
- Parking: use the main car park. The courts are a two-minute walk past the pro shop.
